The Hollywood sign open today

                     Hollywood sign

Baroque, the famous HOLLYWOOD sign is on a hillside overlooking — what else — Hollywood, a portion of Greater Los Angeles, California usually called Griffith Park. The sign in on the official Griffith Hiking Trail and near the Griffith Observatory.
When the sign was first installed, read “Hollywood.” It was named after a real estate development, but the “… The Land” part was removed.

The original sign location is on the hill above Hollywood, California, specifically above the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Beachwood Canyon almost directly North from Beachwood drive.

Hollywood sign lit

The actual original sign is long gone, having been replaced (in the same location) with a steel copy decades ago.
LA can barely afford to keep their streets paved, how are they going to pay for lives? LA was a giant suburb in search of a city, then starting about 1980 they dropped a big ugly city on it. Everything from the Levittown of Torrance to the pristine laws of Los Felix got the cheap, dumpy apartments and soulless hi rises of the Wilshire district just dumped on top of its head, with concomitant TRAFFIC! So the leafy hood seen in Rebel without a Cause became an odd urban -suburban hybrid that satisfied nobody and aggravated everybody. All its vulgar mismatch of affluence and ghetto land mesh meld to make who we know as LA, and no they can’t afford lights.

The Hollywood land sign change

But after an earthquake toppled the last four letters, it was left alone. You can see how very steep the slope is there on the Santa Monica Mountains. Because of the slope and the transmitter towers on top, as well as the very real danger of fire and/or damaging the sign, hikers are not allowed near it. The threat of personal injury is very great, and you shouldn’t take the chance.

I can see the Hollywood sign from my home in San Pedro, L. A.’s harbor city, a distance of some 30 miles as the raven flies. If it was the original sign I could see it at night, as the original was lighted and flashed the words “Holly,” “wood” and “land” in succession. The sign was built to last 18 months and has, with replacements, been on the side of Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills segment of the Santa Monica Mountains, in place since 1923. The word “LAND” was removed in 1949 when the City of Los Angeles Parks Department took over maintenance. The city did not do a particularly good job of their maintenance, so in 1979 Hugh Hefner, of Playboy fame, led a fund-raising effort that brought in about $250,000 to replace the existing wood and sheet metal structure with all steel letters, which is what you see today.

The reason the Hollywood sign was placed was because the sign was visible because it was originally Hollywood land when it was built in 1923 as a When the sign was rebuilt to say Hollywood, the sign remained until the late 1940s. The sign was made again in 1978 of what we see today. The sign can be seen even beyond Long Beach. However, driving near the sign will depend on going on a very narrow road with no parking. You still have to walk a mile to reach the Hollywood sign. The location of the sign is in Griffith Park. Be aware that parking on the street is not allowed for most of the year. The nearest main street to the Hollywood Sign is Franklin Avenue.

Hollywood Sign at night

The Hollywood / Highlands complex is incredibly secure because it is frequented by tourists and shoppers.
Walking along the Hollywood Blade though was dicey from the 70s. There are lots of cheap shops around, vibrant and homeless hanging.
About a year ago, a tourist was stabbed to death on Highland Avenue after refusing to pay a housewife across a Hollywood / Highland street.
So during the day you are probably fine, but at night I say no.
And a lot more than I can count on Hollywood. Was there yesterday and my mother was in Hollywood High.
It is always good for tourists to avoid beautiful places. You can safely go from fun and dangerous to a few blocks.

Hollywood Sign deaths

Okay, there’s “dead” and then creatively lifeless. The risky hostile corporate entity that you would be is not worse than morality, that you became the helicopter father or mother instead of the freewheeling college dropout.
Hollywood may be disappointed with their re-use of their “proven” franchises and their attempts to run it safely by providing a moving demographic. But obviously they are still making movies and involved in business.

The Hollywood sign famous

The movie's earnings didn't go into a tailspin, and MGM is the only big studio to go bankrupt in recent years (and they emerged from it successfully). As Steve Paolo mentions, audiences are rewarding clever and original movies to them in more numbers than adaptations and sequels.
And indeed, very few people complain about books being made into movies. Adaptations are often quite surprising (Lot R, Harry Potter, James Bond, Batman starts). Indeed, the ten faithful adaptations of Pride and Prejudice (TV and film) clearly show that any director can create the same story in the same styling, using the same base material, different from others.

The finger you are pointing at should point to a general viewer. Only the studios are no longer willing to change, not even the public. People choose their films based on their familiarity with the franchise, the huge marketing costs, and the title cast. If they don't take a chance and watch The Ice, the War starts tomorrow or Thin Ice, the studios will just fool you into making this kind of movie.

That there are no other cities in the world that has a sign with letters 40 ft high naming the city.
The sign used to say Hollywood when it was built and the “LAND” part fell apart from age and lack of upkeep, but don't quote me on that part of it falling down because of lack of maintenance.

I can tell you that, even though I was born and raised in the City of Los Angeles and not a lot of touristy things I find cool, but it's always a cool thing when I see the sign. Every time. It's like when I see the ocean. Growing up about a mile from the beach there isn't a time when I get to see or even just a glance of the ocean that it doesn't fascinate me and questions start running through my head.
